Artificial Oocyte Activation (AOA)
A laboratory technique that helps eggs fertilise normally when previous cycles had low fertilisation.

- Rescues low-fertilisation cycles
- Used in carefully selected cases
- Paired with ICSI
About this treatment
Sometimes, even after ICSI, eggs fail to fertilise as they should. Artificial Oocyte Activation (AOA) is a specialised lab technique that gives the egg the chemical 'activation' signal it needs to begin developing into an embryo.
We use AOA in carefully selected cases — typically where a previous cycle had a very low fertilisation rate — to materially improve the chance that injected eggs go on to fertilise and form healthy embryos.
Who it's for
- Total or very low fertilisation in a previous ICSI cycle
- A suspected egg-activation deficiency
- Severe male-factor cases after ICSI
Key benefits
- Can markedly improve fertilisation rates
- Helps couples after a failed-fertilisation cycle
- Targeted, evidence-based use

Oocyte Activation (AOA) — your questions
Common questions about this treatment. Anything else? Our team is happy to talk it through.
Mainly when a previous ICSI cycle resulted in very low or zero fertilisation despite good eggs and sperm — a sign the egg may not be activating normally.
It's used selectively and only where clinically indicated. Your specialist will discuss whether it's appropriate for your situation.
