PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease)

The widely-used Indian term for polycystic ovaries — and how it differs from PCOS.

PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) is the term most commonly used in India for ovaries that contain many small follicles and release eggs irregularly. In everyday use it overlaps heavily with PCOS, and the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Strictly speaking, PCOD describes the ovarian appearance and irregular ovulation, while PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is the broader hormonal syndrome that can also affect metabolism, skin and hair. The distinction matters less than getting the right, individualised management — which is what we focus on.

How PCOD affects fertility

Like PCOS, PCOD affects fertility chiefly through irregular ovulation. With cycle regulation and, where needed, ovulation induction or IVF, conception is very achievable for most women.

How we diagnose & treat it

Our approach mirrors our PCOS care: confirm the diagnosis, support cycle regularity through nutrition and medication, and use ovulation induction or assisted reproduction when required.

Because PCOD ovaries can over-respond to stimulation, we monitor cycles closely and often use a freeze-all strategy in IVF to keep treatment safe and comfortable.

PCOD — your questions

Frequently asked

PCOD is very manageable. With the right support most women regulate their cycles and conceive. Managing weight and metabolism also protects long-term health.

PCOD usually refers to the polycystic ovaries and irregular ovulation; PCOS is the broader hormonal syndrome. For fertility care the management is largely the same.
